Some Important Things To Know About Osteoporosis

Chris Burke

There are many men and especially women who suffer from osteoporosis. This is a condition that affects many people and can have serious and painful complications if not addressed correctly. Here are some things you need to know about osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones progressively become weaker and more brittle until they break easily. It is a condition that happens to many men and women, although women are much more susceptible to it. Over time the bones in the body thin out. You probably don't even know it is happening until you see posture problems in the body, such as a hunched back, or you have a bone break. This condition, if not treated, can become serious and can severely decrease the person's quality of life. This is why it is important to see the doctor regularly and be on the lookout for any signs that you have osteoporosis.

How Do You Treat Osteoporosis?

Since the condition comes with age, it is not common for healthy children, or young adults to get it. But by the time you are around 30 you should be on the lookout, especially if it runs in your family. Virtually everyone will experience their bones thinning, this is just a part of age. However, it is called osteoporosis when the bones thin and become brittle at an unusual speed.

If you have the condition you need to make sure that you are caring for your body. Regular exercise is vital, this will keep the muscles around the bones strong and will prevent breakage. It is also important that you watch your diet. Eating foods that are nutrient rich and high in calcium will encourage healthy bone growth. It will also keep the rest of your body healthy to support your bones.

What Do I Do If I Have A Broken Bone?

In most cases the doctor will avoid surgery if at all possible. This is because surgery on a person with osteoporosis isn't guaranteed to fix the problem, and it can have lasting side effects. Instead, the doctor may prescribe a brace or cast to be worn for longer than what you would normally think is common, until the bone can heal itself. If it is determined that the bone cannot heal on it's own, then surgery may be required.

These are just a few things you need to know about osteoporosis.
