Tips To Ease Bloating

Chris Burke

When one experiences that achy, tight, swollen feeling in their gut called bloating, it can ruin the best laid plans. It can be hard to button your jeans and even harder to find the energy to get things done. There are several causes of bloating: digestive disorders, excessive gas, food allergies and sensitivities, constipation, hormonal changes or it can be a sign of more serious problems. If there are other symptoms accompanying the bloating, meet with your physician. For occasional bloating caused by indigestion, here are a few remedies you can try at home.

Fennel

When you find yourself bloated or with an upset stomach, warm fennel tea, can sometimes ease the discomfort and bloating. You can usually find fennel tea near the coffee and tea section of a grocery store or drugstore. Fennel is often paired with other herbs, like mint which can help with digestion or chamomile which is a calming and soothing herb. If you are not a fan of tea, you can try chewing fennel seeds or mint leaves.

Ginger

This herb is known to help relieve gas and soothe the digestive tract. Raw ginger will be the most effective. You can make a tea out of it, by peeling the garlic and seeping it in hot water. Honey can be added to taste. There is also ginger supplements and powders. Be careful and do not take more than four grams a day, because it could lead to heartburn.

Probiotics

Probiotics contain good bacteria that will help you break down your food. This can be purchased in a grocery store, pharmacy or health food stores. You can also get probiotics from fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha. These foods can be purchased or made at home. The fermentation process grows healthy bacteria that aids in digestion.

Water-Rich Fruits and Vegetables

Water-rich fruits and vegetables naturally relieve bloating in the stomach. These include cucumbers, celery, melons, and berries. And of course, any fruit or vegetables that are fermented are even better for you. Vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, snap peas, onion and garlic can be hard on your stomach causing excess bloating and gas.

When suffering from bloating, it's good to know your body. As you try different herbs and supplements, and avoid other foods you may be sensitive to, listen to how your body responds. And if your symptoms worsen or change, make sure to see a medical professional. Everyone is different, but these tips will help guide you to a healthy, happy gut.
