Tips for Screening Individuals Prior to Hiring Them as Drivers

Chris Burke

If you recently opened a taxicab business and are going to be hiring a fleet of drivers to handle the transportation needs of people who live in the vicinity, screening individuals before hiring them is a must if you want to ensure that passengers will be safe while being transported. Use the tips below to assist with the hiring process.

Obtain Personal Information and Driving Records

Advertise that you are in need of drivers, and provide contact information for interested parties. Be readily available to speak with individuals who would like a job. During the interview process, obtain personal information about each applicant.

Find out what types of jobs each person held in the past, and inquire about driving jobs that were previously held. Request that each applicant provide you with a copy of their driving record so that you can determine if any of the people have ever been involved in traffic altercations or have received citations due to their driving abilities.

Require Alcohol Testing Prior to Being Hired

Drinking alcohol and driving are a deadly mix and can tarnish your reputation if you hire a driver who partakes in this activity. After narrowing down your search of applicants, meet with the people who have stood out to you and who you feel are your best candidates. Purchase an alcohol testing kit. Either a breathalyzer or urine strips can be used during the testing phase. Requiring potential employees to go to a testing site, like Physical Exams Inc, is an option too.

Tell the applicants that they will need to pass an alcohol test prior to being hired as a driver. Once you have cleared each person and have deemed them as a safe driver who will not be likely to cause a passenger harm, schedule a follow-up meeting to discuss working for you, the routes that will be driven, and the hours that you will need covered.

Offer Trial Runs

If you are wary about hiring new drivers on a permanent basis, request that each driver perform a trial run to help you determine if you would like to hire each person as a full-time employee. During trial runs, allow drivers to transport several passengers and have the drivers check in with you periodically so that you are aware of how they are handling their responsibilities.

Contact passengers to inquire about the rides they  were given and to make sure that each customer was satisfied with the service that they received. Based upon this information, make your decision concerning who to hire as a permanent employee.
