5 Ways To Keep The Flu Away

Chris Burke

During the cold months, you are more likely to catch the flu because you are stuck inside a lot and close to others who may be sick. The flu can bring on a lot of unpleasant symptoms, like muscle aches, fever, chills, and cough. However, if you take good care of yourself, you can reduce your chances of contracting this virus.

Here are five effective ways to keep the flu away.

Get Exercise

Regular exercise does not just help you maintain a healthy weight. It can also keep you from catching the flu and other viruses by boosting your immune system. If it is too cold to exercise outdoors, consider running on a treadmill or doing laps inside a mall.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Including nutritious foods in your diet can do a lot of good for your body, including preventing the flu. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins can strengthen your immune system and help you fight off illnesses. Instead of eating a doughnut or muffin for breakfast, have a bowl of oatmeal with a side of fruit.

Wash Your Hands Often

Flu season is not the time to skimp on hand washing. Make sure to wash your hands before you eat and prepare food and after you use the bathroom and blow your nose. To get your hands clean, scrub them with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds. If you don't have access to soap and water, use hand sanitizer.

Stay Away from Sick People

If you notice someone coughing or sneezing, it may be best to keep your distance from that person. If this person is your family member or friend, just explain to him or her that you want to avoid getting sick.

Get the Flu Shot

If you have not already gotten it, think about getting the flu shot. This vaccine is considered one of the most effective ways to prevent the flu. You may feel a little soreness in your arm the next day and experience a low fever, but it will keep you from becoming very ill.

The flu can be a real downer, so it is best to prevent it in the first place. If you follow these tips, you can lower your risk of catching the flu this season. However, if you still contract the flu bug, remember to stay in bed and drink plenty of fluids. To learn more, contact a physicians office like Advance Medical of Naples, LLC
