Questions To Ask A Physician After A Loved One Gets Cancer

Chris Burke

It's common to experience a wide range of emotions when a loved one gets a cancer diagnosis, including anger, confusion, and sadness. While you shouldn't stifle these feelings, you also need to be supportive to the patient — and that involves taking an active role in his or her care. Part of the way that you can achieve this goal is to visit the cancer clinic with the patient and talk to those who are caring for him or her. The more than you understand the diagnosis, the more than you can help in whatever way possible. Here are some questions that you may wish to ask the physician.

How Can We Help?

Asking how you can help is a simple way to show your support for the patient. Unlike other illnesses, there if often little that you can do to battle the cancer — but you can be confident in the care that the patient is getting at a center like Silver Cancer Institute. The physician looking after your family member may discuss a variety of supportive steps that you can take. For example, in order for the patient to keep his or her health up, the doctor may ask you to prepare healthy meals. You may also be asked to focus on being positive and uplifting in an effort to keep the patient's spirits high.

What Are The Signs Of Progression?

In many cases, your loved one will visit the cancer clinic for regular scans that indicate how the treatment is affecting the cancer. Ideally, these scans will reveal that the treatment is working, but this won't always be the case. In some types of cancer, there may be signs of the cancer's progression that are evident even without a scan — and it's important for you to be able to identify them. For example, in the case of an abdominal tumor, the person may feel sharp pain at a certain point. Knowing that this is a bad sign can compel you to get the patient into the clinic promptly.

What Is The Long-Term Prognosis?

You might be nervous to ask about the patient's long-term prognosis, but this is important information to ascertain. You don't want to be surprised if things take a turn for the worst in the future, so asking the physician to paint a picture for you is helpful. He or she can talk about how other patients with the same type of cancer have responded to the treatments. If the situation is dire, the doctor can often give you an estimate of how much time the patient has left.
