Deciding What To Do If You Are Having A Hard Time Hearing

Chris Burke

Hearing loss can be a big concern and while having difficulty hearing is not always an indication of permanent damage the only way to be sure is to have your hearing tested. Even if a permanent hearing loss is detected by testing there may be things you can do to improve your hearing. But a trip to the audiologist is the only way to get a clear picture of what is causing the problem.

Testing Your Hearing

Your first visit to the audiologist we'll start with hearing tests. The audiologist may also look in your ears to visually check for damage or concerns. Take the time to explain to the audiologist what kinds of things and in what situations you are having difficulty hearing. The causes and solutions may differ depending on the hearing loss you're experiencing. The only way for them to get a true assessment of your hearing is to understand the nature of the problem. The hearing tests will show what frequency ranges you're hearing loss falls into but letting the audiologist know that you struggle more in a crowded room then you do in a quiet one, for instance,  can help them determine how to help you.

Hearing Aids

Having hearing loss does not automatically mean you are a candidate for hearing aids. In some situations, hearing aids will not improve your hearing, while in other situations they may be the best option. Once your testing has been completed talk with the audiologist about the options available to you and what your level of hearing loss is. The audiologist me recommend you see an ear , nose, and throat specialist to discuss for the treatment for your hearing loss. If the audiologist recommends hearing aids, talk to them about what kinds of hearing use will work best for your situation. Not all hearing aids are just alike in fact, they can have very different properties and working very different ways.

Hearing Loss Prevention

Avoiding this trip to the audiologist in the first place requires a little bit of prevention. If you work in a noisy environment, simply using an approved set of your plugs or over-the-ear style muffs can make all the difference in the world. In many cases, hearing loss is the result of exposure to loud noises over long periods of time. This can include work environments that are very noisy, long-term exposure to loud music with earbuds or headphones, or daily exposure to other loud noises. If you know you're going to be in a noisy environment, taking a minute to protect your hearing is better than trying to correct it later.
