Keeping Your Eyes Healthy

Chris Burke

You want to do your part to make sure you are taking proper care of your eyes, so you can hopefully avoid certain eye conditions that are preventable. Here are some of the things that you should be doing for your eyes:

Make sure you get a comprehensive eye exam

You want to be sure you have a full comprehensive eye exam done on your eyes annually. This is the best thing that you can do for your eyes because it can help certain problems to be caught very early on, so they can be promptly and properly treated. Your exam should consist of a chart reading, as well as a dilated eye exam where the optometrist can see more in your eyes to make sure everything is okay. One thing you do need to know is when you go in for an eye exam where your eyes will be dilated, you want someone to go with you, so they can drive you home safely since your vision will be distorted for a while.

Follow a good diet

The way you eat will play a role in all of your body's health systems and this includes your eyes. It's important for you to make sure you are eating a diet that is complete in all of the food groups. However, you want to be especially sure you are eating foods specifically known to be good for your eyes, such as carrots, kale, broccoli and other types of vegetables. Eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids is also good for the overall health of your eyes.

Keep track of your family's eye history

You want to be aware of problems that can run on your family and you want to make the optometrist aware of these things. This way, the problems known to run in your family will be watched for, allowing them to be caught early.

Make sure you stay at a healthy weight

If you become too thin or too overweight, then this won't be healthy for you with regards to many aspects and one area of concern will be your eyes. When you are too thin, your body may not be getting all of the nutrients it needs to maintain its proper health. When you are obese, you will be increasing your chances of developing conditions that can take their tole on your eyes, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Protect your eyes with the proper eyewear

If you are going to be out in the sun, then you want to make sure you are protecting your eyes by wearing good shades that offer you UV protection. If you are going to be in an area where debris will be possibly flying through the air, then you want to protect your eyes by wearing the correct safety goggles.
